Tibetan-Inspired Prayer Flag Printing with Anna Hansen at Art Access
Prayer flags have a long history of bringing health, good fortune, and blessings upon a specific place. In this class we will be creating our ownprayer flags with imagery that is relevant to our own lives. Participants will also learn a brief history relief printmaking in eastern and western traditions. We will cover the basics of proper carving techniques and how to successfully translate an image into a block, or stamp. Design, detail, contrast, and texture will be important parts of creating our prayer flag imagery. After designing and carving our own blocks, we will discuss different printing techniques onto paper and fabric to achieve different visual results. Each participant will complete one block and print their design several times. If time allows and participants are interested, we will print enough prayer flags for everyone in the class to exchange, and then go home with a complete set of flags!
ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST:
Anna Hansen has been dabbling in art since a very young age. Anna graduated from the University in Utah with a degree in Printmaking and a Certificate in Book Arts. She then swiftly moved to Southern California where she spent most of her time teaching art in public elementary schools. She was also a member of an art colony in Fullerton where she was able to teach adult workshops and experiment with more painting, drawing, and installation work. In the summer of 2014 she returned to Salt Lake City where she has founded The Hex Press, a mobile printing endeavor which feeds her geeky side, as well as taken up ranks with SaltGrass Printmakers, a community printshop in Sugar House. Her other passions are gardening, fitness, her pit bull, and scuba diving.

SUGAR HOUSE ART WALK – FEBRUARY 12TH. 6:00 to 9:00 pm.
We are kicking off our 2016 year by featuring prints and portfolios organized by Utah artists, Adam Larsen (Snow College, Ephraim) and Andrew Rice (University of Utah, Salt Lake City). These portfolios showcase Utah and Intermountain printmakers. We will be celebrating the vitality and unique vision of our contemporary local printmakers during the Sugar House Art Walk.
Squared portfolio, was organized by Adam Larsen. Adam invited his printmakers to confront the square visually. The square format was uncommon in art until the advent of abstraction and presents distinct challenges of composition and expression.
Communities West 2 portfolio was organized by Sukha Worob (Montana State University) and Andrew Rice. The first Communities West portfolio was so successful Sukha and Andrew created part deux.
Last summer, Andrew Rice was at the AltPress (Salt Lake City Main Library) event printing exquisite corpse steamroller prints. We will have examples of the Large prints on display and the small set of playing cards re-created from the originals on display.
