Starting at noon

In the Saltgrass
parking lot

Sponsored by

Steamroller Printing!!!

We'll be printing in the parking lot of Saltgrass Printmakers on Saturday August 16th by driving over the plates with a steamroller! Participants will carve their woodcuts into plywood, we'll ink those up, put the paper on, and use the steamroller as the press. It should be great fun! Spectators, cheerleaders, gawkers, and printmakers are all welcome!

Where: Saltgrass Printmakers 2126 S. 1000 E. SLC
(Sugarhouse) 467.1080

When: Saturday, August 16th, starting at noon

How: Large relief prints made using a steamroller as a press

Who: Saltgrass members and anyone else who wants to carve a plate. That means you!

What: We'll provide the paper, ink, and steamroller. You provide a carved woodcut plate.

Details: The steamroller will be around 34" wide so that's the critical
dimension. Your plate shouldn't be wider than that, but it can be as long as you like (although you should keep the paper sizes in mind too!). We recommend using 1/2" plywood and carving up to 1/8 to 1/4" deep (but please keep in mind that we haven't ever tried this, so we're experimenting too!). We will have black ink and the following papers:

  • 30x44" Stonehenge printmaking paper, warm white (250gsm)
  • 35x45" thin chipboard, tan/natural
  • 36"x30' rolls of Utrecht drawing paper, white (90lb)
  • 38"x180' roll of Kozuke, 60% Kozo Japanese fiber paper (40gsm)

Ongoing

We've had some great visits recently from art classes from the University of Utah (Maureen O'Hara Ure's class) and SLCC (Allen Bishop's class). We enjoy showing off the shop, talking about printmaking, showing prints in our gallery, and helping students understand prints. If you'd like to schedule a studio tour, give us a call!
