Drypoint Lithography |
| |
Dates: August 13, 14, 15, 2007 (M,T,W)
Instructor: Bill Hosterman, Grand Valley State University, Michigan
Class fee: $175
Bill Hosterman is a visiting artist from Michigan where he is a professor at Grand Valley State College. During a Fulbright scholarship to study printmaking in South Africa, Master Printer Mark Attwood of The Artists' Press introduced Bill to a new printmaking process that can best be described as drypoint lithography. The process is a hybrid of intaglio and lithography and is done on metal lithographic plates. The result is an image with the line quality of a drypoint and the richness of value akin to a mezzotint, and it can be consistently editioned.
While the basic method is straightforward, knowledge of hand lithography is helpful. After applying tinted gum Arabic to a metal lithographic plate, an image may be created by scratching through the coating. A mixture of alcohol and shellac is then buffed onto the plate. Finally, the image is prepared and rolled up using a leather roller. Drypoint lithography may be used exclusively to create an image, or it may be combined with other metal plate lithography techniques. This is a lithographic process that can be printed on an etching press!!
Class size will be held to eight printmakers. Bill has demonstrated this technique at the IMPACT4 Conference in Berlin and at the last MAPC conference at Athens, Ohio. This is an extraordinary chance to add a new technique to our printmaking arsenals!!
Below are examples of drypoint lithography. You can find out more about Bill on his web site at www.gvsu.edu/art/hoster.html

The class will include monotype and editionable printimaking approaches using a variety of papers. Students are encouraged to bring plates that have been previously developed to include in printing and chine colle application. Erik will demonstrate techniques using frottage and trace monotype. Reductive Wood Block Printing. With this technique the artist begins with a wood block with
little or none of the surface carved away. The artist prints this, using a light color. The
artist then carves away more of the surface and prints it again over the previous color, using a
different color. The artist "reduces" the surface until they reach the final print. |
