Collagraph Demonstration & Print Club 2018

28 Apr

Think “collage” when you think “collagraph” and you’ve got the key to this style of printmaking. A collagraph is a print made from a plate that’s built up from anything you can stick down onto a base of cardboard or wood.

It is a relatively new medium, having gained popularity with our interest in reusing and recycling materials.  The materials you use create textures and shapes, while how you ink the plate adds tone to the print.

We may start the session with a short demonstration. The rest of the day the shop will be dedicate to the building and printing the collagraphs.

Special Topics could include Silk Collagraphs, Burning & Searing Surfaces, incorporating organic materials, and using construction or recycled materials.

Stefanie Dykes will demonstration different collagraph methods depending on Collagraph Club members’ interest.  She’ll demonstrate how to print a collagraph as a relief (inking the top surfaces only), intaglio (inking the recesses) and how to combine both approaches (viscosity printing).

Costs per session if you decide to participate will be $35.00 per five hour working session plus any additional materials.

You can gather and bring with you most of the materials needed to create a collagraph matrix. Saltgrass will provide materials for any Special Collagraph Topics demonstration. Saltgrass will provide shellac or sealants for the collagraphs and inks.

Sunlight & Water Photopolymer Printmaking Workshop

28 Apr

May 12 & 13, 2018  ~ 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Instructors: Michael Gaffney and Stefanie Dykes

Photopolymer plates are light sensitized steel-backed polymer material used by artists as an alternative to hazardous printing techniques. It is a simple, safe and fast approach to creating plates similar to traditional etching and relief printing.

Saturday, May 12th  Each participant will become familiar with how to expose, develop and print photopolymer plates. We will experiment with different approaches to making the artwork by creating hand drawn imagery and using photographic methods.

On the first day, we will focus on creating drawings for our transparencies. We will provide liquid opaque paint or ink, Rubylith films, lithographic crayons and certain opaque graphite pencils for you to experiment with.  Our images will be created on transparent frosted mylar. This “transparency” is used as a contact positive or negative for either intaglio or relief.

You will become familiar with exposing, developing and printing your photopolymer plate.

At the end of the day, we will introduce a few digital basics to help create the film positive for photographic imagery.  If you don’t have Photoshop, we can work together to make the necessary adjustments to your photo and your print film positive at Saltgrass.

Sunday, May 13th  We will be focused on using the double exposure technique to created either your drawn or photographic images and printing the photopolymer plates individually and collaboratively.
