Saturday, March 26, 2022 will be a work day at the press.

Individuals will sign up for a 2hr work session. 

First session starting at 11:00 a.m. Last session finishing up by 5:00 pm.

Workshop fee: $175.00 includes all your materials. Saltgrass Members 20% off workshop fee.

Combine your love of plants and printmaking! Students will learn basic sketching and observation techniques for drawing live plants. They will then turn their drawings into colorful silkscreen prints; learning the full process for how to make a screen, and techniques for how to successfully make a blended gradient background.

THE MAGIC OF THE THREE-STICK KITE

WITH MASTER KITE BUILDERS: ALI FUJINO, JOSE SAINZ AND SCOTT SKINNER

Dates: June 4 & 5, 2022

We are offering a two-day workshop with world renown kite builders, Jose Sainz and Scott Skinner, who will help us explore the artistic and aerodynamic variations of three-stick kite construction. We will learn which are the best papers to use with these handmade kites. Ali Fujino, Seattle water-based style print artist, will lead a class and show us how to create non-traditional papers for kites.

Sunday, June 5th – Kite Construction and Building 

On Sunday, June 5th join Scott Skinner and Jose Sainz as they teach us how to create their “three-stick magic” paper and bamboo kites. Scott and Jose will share their distinct styles when building the ‘three stick’ kites. Scott starts with the American traditional Barn Door kite and finds many variations using three straight sticks. Jose starts with a much more organic shape made simply with two curved sticks and one straight one. The possibilities for original kite design become endless!

THE INSTRUCTORS

SCOTT SKINNER is the former director of the Drachen Foundation, and a longtime philanthropist, kite collector, writer, and kite artist. 

JOSE SAINZ, since 1989 has been making and flying kites with an emphasis on bold graphic Aztec god motifs and for which he has won numerous international awards.

ALI FUJINO, is former executive director of the Drachen Foundation and non-traditional water-based printmaker of different media.  Printmaking is a part-time pursuit.
