Learn how to make custom, professional portfolio boxes for your print (or drawing) series. We will cover the process from design to construction. These boxes are not only a beautiful way to present your artwork but allow for safe storage, travel, and viewing.

One-day workshop on the use of a board shear, book press and basic tools to construct a basic cloth and book board double wall clamshell box. Each student will construct a box using the materials provided. Handout will be provided that explains the cuts and techniques

In this class we will discuss: 

  • Measuring and spacing for box construction
  • The use of a board shear to quickly cut book board to accurate repeatable sizes
  • How to glue up box pieces using a book press
  • Discuss types of cloth and alternative materials for covering boxes
  • How to measure, cut and glue book cloth to wrap box trays and covers
  • Techniques for hiding book cloth seams on boxes
  • Use of book press to “nip” or adhere box trays to covers
  • Use of card stock to raise or lower the surface of box trays (for labels and inserts)
  • Tricks for fixing problems with construction
