Learn the ancient Japanese art of Suminagashi!
Suminagashi, or “floating ink” is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into beautiful sheets of decorative paper. It originated in Japan as early as the 12th century. Students will learn techniques for making their own marbled paper. These sheets make great end papers for book binding or portfolios, or can stand as works of art on their own.
Anna Bugbee learned the process while working with Yukari Hayashida, a master of Japanese book and paper arts, during a two week long Japanese book making workshop at Penland school of crafts.
