Class Description

Collagraph prints are created from common materials found at a hardware store, in your junk drawer or discovered during a walk in your neighborhood. Students in this course will use various techniques to build up textured surfaces with common materials. We will be exploring form, texture and composition as well as developing a conceptual approach to our prints.

Conceptually, students will be combining the idea of topophilia or the ‘love of place’ with the physical attributes of collagraph printmaking to create what I am calling a “Printscape.”  W.H. Auden defined topophilia as ‘a landscape infused with a sense of history.’ We spend time reflecting on our unique definitions of place. To kick start the creative process, students will explore surfaces and textures through a frottage collage exercise.

Collagraph matrices have a topographical quality that we use to reference a place. I am constantly surprised by their ability to retain creases, folds, peaks, and valleys, to record the mark of the artist like a riverbed, and to hold impressions of objects.

Let’s take the theme of topophilia (‘the love of place’) and combine it with the collagraph printmaking technique that so often reads as a landscape and can carry physical details, memories, or emotions.

This process is inventive and inspiring! The workshop is geared for beginning students, but experienced artists can join us as well.
