Artists who love to draw find freedom using these techniques, their color sense is expanded, and their drawing abilities can evolve to a higher level. Participants will print and develop a variety of printed material during the first day that will be added to, collaged and re-developed during the second day of the workshop.

All levels of experience welcome.

Collagraph Demonstration & Print Club 2018

28 Apr

Think “collage” when you think “collagraph” and you’ve got the key to this style of printmaking. A collagraph is a print made from a plate that’s built up from anything you can stick down onto a base of cardboard or wood.

It is a relatively new medium, having gained popularity with our interest in reusing and recycling materials.  The materials you use create textures and shapes, while how you ink the plate adds tone to the print.

Lisa McAffe-Nichols pulling a Silk Noir collagraph print

We may start the session with a short demonstration. The rest of the day the shop will be dedicate to the building and printing the collagraphs.

Special Topics could include Silk Collagraphs, Burning & Searing Surfaces, incorporating organic materials, and using construction or recycled materials.

Saturday, May 5th at 1:00 p.m.

Let’s meet at Saltgrass Printmakers on Saturday, May 5th at 1:00 p.m.

We’ll talk about how we want to proceed with the print club. I’ll have examples of collagraph plates. We’ll discuss how often to meet, i.e. every six weeks. You don’t need to commit to every collagraph print session.

Stefanie Dykes will demonstration different collagraph methods depending on Collagraph Club members’ interest.  She’ll demonstrate how to print a collagraph as a relief (inking the top surfaces only), intaglio (inking the recesses) and how to combine both approaches (viscosity printing).

Costs per session if you decide to participate will be $35.00 per five hour working session plus any additional materials.

You can gather and bring with you most of the materials needed to create a collagraph matrix. Saltgrass will provide materials for any Special Collagraph Topics demonstration. Saltgrass will provide shellac or sealants for the collagraphs and inks.
