THE MAGIC OF THE THREE-STICK KITE

WITH MASTER KITE BUILDERS: ALI FUJINO, JOSE SAINZ AND SCOTT SKINNER

Dates: June 4 & 5, 2022

We are offering a two-day workshop with world renown kite builders, Jose Sainz and Scott Skinner, who will help us explore the artistic and aerodynamic variations of three-stick kite construction. We will learn which are the best papers to use with these handmade kites. Ali Fujino, Seattle water-based style print artist, will lead a class and show us how to create non-traditional papers for kites.

On Saturday, June 4th Ali Fujino, Seattle water-based style print artist, will lead a class on how to create non-traditional papers for kites.

Sunday, June 5th – Kite Construction and Building

On Sunday, June 5th join Scott Skinner and Jose Sainz as they teach us how to create their “three-stick magic” paper and bamboo kites. Scott and Jose will share their distinct styles when building the ‘three stick’ kites. Scott starts with the American traditional Barn Door kite and finds many variations using three straight sticks. Jose starts with a much more organic shape made simply with two curved sticks and one straight one. The possibilities for original kite design become endless!

Each participant will receive a gift from Scott’s collection of handmade/printed papers.

For the two-day workshop with Ali, Jose & Scott – $150.00. One adult with one child 12 years and older can participate for one workshop fee.

Paper Marbling with Anna Bugbee – CLASS FULL

7 Jan

Saturday, February 19, 2022 Workshop starts at 12:00 p.m. We’ll marble paper until 4:00 p.m.

Workshop fee: $100.00 includes all your materials. Saltgrass Members 20% off workshop fee.

Learn the ancient Japanese art of Suminagashi!

Suminagashi, or “floating ink” is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into beautiful sheets of decorative paper. It originated in Japan as early as the 12th century. Students will learn techniques for making their own marbled paper. These sheets make great end papers for book binding or portfolios, or can stand as works of art on their own.

Anna Bugbee learned the process while working with Yukari Hayashida, a master of Japanese book and paper arts, during a two week long Japanese book making workshop at Penland school of crafts.

How to Register: Contact Stefanie Dykes @ stefanie.dykes822@gmail.com

Cyanotypes – Sunshine Printmaking

27 May

Instructor: Haylee Canonico

Sign up with UofU Continuing Education Lifelong Learning

https://continue.utah.edu/lifelong/class/llart_256_cyanotypes_printmaking_with_the_sun

Did you know the first photographically illustrated book was made using cyanotype? Cyanotype is a traditional, photographic process that creates a blue (cyan!) image using a chemical solution and ultraviolet rays from the sun. Contemporary photographers, printmakers, painters, and all sorts of creators love this method for its deep blue tones. Join a local artist and printmaker to learn how to create a cyanotype print by using objects, drawings (hand-drawn or digital), or photographic negatives. Your instructor will demonstrate how the process works and show you how to experiment with a variety of materials. Next, you will learn how to process and develop your image into a final work of art. You will not only leave with a uniquely beautiful set of prints but also a new method to use in your art practice!

Workshop starts March 30, 2022.

Haylee Canonico is a Salt Lake-based printmaker and member at Saltgrass Printmakers. She received a BFA in painting/drawing and a BA in art history at the University of Utah in 2018. Haylee’s primary mediums are screen printing, cyanotype, lithography and intaglio. Haylee has exhibited locally and nationally, as well as participated in Salt Lake art markets. Her work explores our relationships to the natural world and complexity of the environments that surround us.

What is a cyanotype?

Cyanotype is a photographic process creating a blue (cyan!) image by exposing a film negative to a chemically coated paper or fabric to ultraviolet rays from the sun. Cyanotype was one of the first photographic printing processes invented in 1842 by the astronomer and scientist Sir John Herschel. Anna Aktins published one of the first photography books using cyanotype to study botanical specimens. Today, photographers, printers, painters, and all sorts of creators (like us) love this method for the deep blue ones.

This is an all levels class. Everyone is welcome, no experience needed.

Background: A steamroller event is rooted in the printing of large-scale woodblocks carved by local artists and community members. We bring the steamroller and print pre-carved blocks throughout the day on Tyvek paper. For this event, we will be printing 40” diameter mandala sets. Each set is comprised of three parts: a center, an inner ring and an exterior ring. Participants can choose which portion they would like to carve. On the day of the event, we will combine the individual parts to create a completed mandala print. We will mix and match the blocks all day long until we have exhausted the possibilities.

Why a mandala shape?  In the past, we have printed individual large scale woodblocks. During these quarantine times, we thought printing a symbol that is commonly found across cultures could help bring us back together as a community. Mandalas have historically been used as a means to orient (re-orient) oneself through a ritual or a devotional act. Maybe such a collaborative creative act might help to rebuild a sense of community? Why not?!

Subject matter? Each individual had creative control of their section of the mandala. Printmakers historically have had a long history as a democratic inclusive creative community. All voices, experiences and points of view were welcome.
